Wildlife road accidents 2000 - 2008
Exploiting the declarations of car accidents with wildlife (ungulates) received by Regione Piemonte (Osservatorio Faunistico) it is possible to analyse this particular kind of car accident.
The declaration of such a kind of accient is made in order to get the repayment of part of the damage by the specific regional funds and so it is conceivable that some of these accidents are not registered. Nevertheless, such a lack of completeness can be assumed to be homogeneous along the spatial dimension and it is thus possible studying wildlife accidents at a provincial level (.csv file) and at the level of municipalities (below) for the entire period taken into consideration (i.e., from 2000 to 2008).
In conclusion, an in order to be completed, it is possible to consider the recent dynamics of registered accidents:
| year | num. of accidents |
| 2000 | 259 |
| 2001 | 154 |
| 2002 | 57 |
| 2003 | 714 |
| 2004 | 827 |
| 2005 | 1222 |
| 2006 | 1105 |
| 2007 | 1284 |
| 2008 | 1126 |
The time dynamics can obviously be influenced by the diffusion of the knowledge about the exystence of such a tool for repayment of damages upon regional funds, but it is worth noting the economic size of the phenomenon: in 2006, for instance, estimated damages were about 1,138,878 euro. Always referring to 2006, the database underlines that 58 accidents implied damages to people.
