Regional Policies for road safety

Road safety is a very important issue in regional policies. It is carried out in two ways: as a part of the implementation process of National Road Safety Plan and as an autonomous contribution to develop a local strategy, shared with the local administrations (Province and Municipalities).

The fist regional act concerning road safety was Piano Regionale d'azione 2004-2005, a regional programme prepared with the objective of implementing the first national annual programme (2002). It was followed by Piano Regionale d'azione 2006-2007, the regional programme that implemented the second national programme (2003).

After that, Regione Piemonte prepared The Regional Road Safety Plan (RRSP), wich has been drawn by the Regional Department for Transport in order to achieve casualty reduction targets and improve safety on Piedmont’s roads. It was definitively approved on April 16 2007.

Besides the planning activity, there are in Piedmont two important instruments to rule the road safety process:

  • the Consulta regionale per la sicurezza stradale (Road Safety Working Party), an organism in wich are involved all the stakeholders, and
  • the Protocol of institutional cooperation for road safety in Piedmont, signed on July 11 2007 by Regione Piemonte, Province and the main Municipalities.
